Monthly Archives: February 2012

Aww…

I ♥ to Read Month is drawing to a close. On Tuesday, the students again had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read). On Wednesday, they had Mountain Expedition Day. We invite those who were involved to tell us what they did that day. On Thursday, they had Librarians’ Pick Day, so the librarians all chose a favourite story to read to the students. Today is Wrap-Up Day, so the students are all dressed up as their favourite book character, and right now they are having a hot-dog lunch. We hope all the elementary students had an excellent month! :)

On Wednesday, the Varsity boys and girls had basketball games against Saint Boniface. The girls lost 41-44. The team’s small forward Cherika Bergsma said after the game, “they were a tough team.” The guys lost 62-73.

On Thursday, they both had games again, against Southeast Collegiate. The girls won 64-26, and the guys lost 31-43. The JV Boys also played against Red River, and they lost 34-52.

Today and tomorrow, the Junior Girls have a tournament at ICS, and the Junior Boys have a tournament at John Gunn. We hope they do well! :)

This afternoon the grade 9′s are leading an assembly on Challenges for high school. We have a few secrets up our sleeves. :)

What have we done…….

Umm…yeah, this has been a pretty normal school week. There was a JV Girls basketball game last night at Saint Boniface (they won), the Varsity Guys had games on Monday and Wednesday (they lost by three points on Wednesday), and that’s about it.

We are also posting the buddy reading pictures, as has been requested by a number of people.

Tonight in the Gym we are having a Trivia Night/Auction to support the ICS Band and Black Light Theatre groups’ trips to Alberta in late March and April 2012 Anno Domini.

On Wednesday, February 29, there will be a Movie Matinée for Grades 7-12 in Immanuel Hall. More details next week.

Happy Long Weekend!!! (No school on Monday — Louis Riel Day)

The Dreaded Second Semester…

Elementary has started their annual I ♥ to Read Month! The theme for this year is “Climb Into a Book and Read!” as you can see in the pictures below. On Tuesday, they had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) which is always a ton of fun! On Wednesday, they spent the afternoon drawing huge murals to hang on the walls. Today, we had Rangers and Rookies (Buddy Reading), which was a lot of fun. On Monday they will be having Guest Readers, so if you would like to come out and read to a class, please contact the office.

High School has begun a new semester. Most kids aren’t very happy about their new classes. I (Colin) myself am overjoyed with the courses I have, but I am a nerd, so that is expected :) . We would like to welcome back one of our Grade 12 students who was gone for the first semester to Louis Riel, Justin Bakker.

There have been many basketball games and tournaments this week. Today and tomorrow the JV Guys have a tournament here in our school. We encourage everyone to come out here and give our team a cheer!

Love and Respect – A Meditation on Two Romantic Songs and the Song of Songs

“You and Me Against the World”

It all started off hangin’ out doing what lovers do
When they’re on their way to fallin’ in love
Everybody said leave you alone
Girl he’s no good for you
But they can’t judge what they don’t know
Cause when I’m with chu your all I see
And when you touch me my body goes weak
Your such apart of my idenity.
That without chu
There’s no me
No nonooo

What were my dreams are now reality
You say all the things that I’m about to speak
No one can ever change the way I feel
Baby it’s you and me against the world
It’s ride or die till the very end
Till the tires pop I’ll be your second skin
Your my man no doubt that I’m your girl
Baby it’s you and me against the world.

This song is ripe with misunderstanding on what love is. I could potentially go on all day on all the different inaccuracies of love this song makes, but for now, we’ll just look at the first one made apparent. It comes right in the title. “You and Me Against the World.” Right away red flags should go up. They don’t always go up, because after all, this can be mistaken as an intense commitment to each other, which is a part of true love. But in the word, “against,” you can see that the couple in the song have no regard for people outside the relationship. This, is not Biblical at all. Further on in the song, the artist speaks of how people expressed their concern about the relationship: “Everybody said leave you alone – Girl he’s no good for you.” Her reply? – “But they can’t judge what don’t know.”. In Song of Songs 8:8-9, the brothers of the beloved are concerned about their younger sister:

“We have a little sister,
and her breasts are not yet grown.
What shall we do for our sister
on the day she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
we will build towers of silver on her.
If she is a door,
we will enclose her with panels of cedar.”

The brothers want nothing but the best for their younger sister, and that would include a suitable man for her. A godly man. God puts rules in place to guide us, because He is a loving God and wants the best for us. That is why he gave the law “Honor your father and your mother.” In the New Testament God said through His servant Peter: “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor” (1 Peter 2:17). Even though the artist feels as if she is in love and others outside the relationship don’t understand, she still is obligated to respect their concern and opinions….

“Butterfly Kisses”

She’ll change her name today
She’ll make a promise and I’ll give her away
Standing in the bride room just staring at her
She asked me what I’m thinkin’
And I said I’m not sure
I just feel like I’m losin’ my baby girl
And she leaned over

Gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there
Stickin’ little white flowers all up in her hair
Walk me down the aisle, Daddy
It’s just about time
Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy?
Daddy don’t cry
Oh, with all that I’ve done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses.
I couldn’t ask God for more; man, this is what love is.

This song by Bob Carlisle shows how godly relationships work; with the approval of the parents. The father in this song has clearly shown that he is in favor of his daughter getting married to the man she chose and is showing this by walking her down the aisle. The daughter has shown the proper respect, as commanded in 1 Peter 2:17.
