Spring Break!!!

By the time this will be posted, the students will all be home enjoying their extra day of Spring Break!

This week was also Spirit Week! Monday was Green Day, although many people forgot to dress up. Tuesday was Career Day, and about 2/3 of high school was dressed up. Wednesday was Summer Day, and nearly everyone had shorts and sunglasses on. Thursday was Fashion Disaster Day, and there were many strange outfits.

On Tuesday, there was a Career Fair for the first 30 people who handed in their permission slips. On Wednesday, Grad pictures were taken.

Mr. Dykstra will post a meditation during Spring Break.

The date of Heritage Fair has been postponed to allow students more time to prepare. It is now on April 11th.

Thursday was a locker cleanup…we’re not going to say how big the garbage piles were…

Thursday was also activity day. At the time of writing this we’ve only had a pizza hot-lunch, but we’ve been told there are many fun games planned for the afternoon.

It’s a Busy Life…

Yesterday the Providence College Chamber Singers performed a few selections in Immanuel Hall, and one of the singers was ICS’s own former student Grace Schreimer. They were extremely good! Afterwords, the high school choir had the opportunity to speak with some of the singers, and many new friendships were formed.

Today the Grade 7, 10, 11, and 12 classes went to the Forks. They learned about bio-fuel, watched (not participated in) a debate about it, and went around to different tables learning about crops. They did a large scavenger hunt in which they had to answer questions to get the next clue. The winners got Tim Horton’s gift cards!

Next Thursday will be an activity afternoon for high school, and Friday is an inservice day. The week after is Spring Break, during which Mr. Dykstra will post another meditation.

Have a good weekend!

Everyday Locomotive…

This week pretty much nothing happened. On Wednesday High School received progress reports. On Thursday, two girls from High School had fun with an empty box.

Students have begun to work on Heritage Fair. There are many interesting projects! The Grade 9 class is making websites instead of backboards this year!

The Grade 10 class got a record number of calendar pages from Mr. Dykstra during Reformed Studies today. Every student but one got two pages!

There is currently a sale going on at the school canteen to raise funds for the High School camping trip.  Many cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other delicacies are being sold! Buy now!

The band class got a good laugh when one of our flute players likened the song we were playing to a pink cupcake. :)

Psalm 93 – A Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 93

The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty;
the LORD is robed in majesty
and is armed with strength.
The world is firmly established;
it cannot be moved.
Your throne was established long ago;
you are from all eternity.

The seas have lifted up, O LORD,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the LORD on high is mighty.

Your statutes stand firm;
holiness adorns your house
for endless days, O LORD.

This short psalm is an incredible song of thanks and praise to our mighty God. The psalmist proclaims his wonder at God’s creation, and tells of the majestic power of the Lord, saying in verse 1 “The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.” We are assured of his providence; he is “mightier than the thunders of the waters,” and he takes care of his people and his creation.
Time and again we ignore the Lord. We remember to call to him in distress, to urge him to save us from our struggles, big or small: you’re having trouble keeping up at school, or perhaps you’re worried about cutbacks at work. Yet when things go well, we often forget to thank him for it, forget to acknowledge the One who gave it to us. We look at creation and we see that it is tainted with sin, and yet we have reason to give thanks to God: we can thank him for saving us, thank him for providing for us day in and day out. When things are going right – maybe you got a promotion at work; you got that A on your math test, whatever – we just need to remember to praise God for whom he is, and thank him for what he’s done.

Ve Vant to Take Your Blood!

We’ll start with sports this week. The Varisty Guys had a Finals game against the Kings School on Monday; they lost 57-45. Last night the JV girls had a game against Steinbach Christian; they lost 29-72. One team member responded to the score by saying, “They were pressing the entire game…” and another member added, “…even though we were losing by 40 points!” The JV guys also played against Carman Collegiate, and they lost 70-32.

Yesterday, we had our first Movie Matinée. The movie we watched was Courageous. It really showed the students what it really means to be a man, and especially a father. It’s an interesting movie, because it puts you on the edge of your seat in suspense, but also really deeply touches your soul. We strongly encourage everyone to purchase this movie and watch it with your family.

As you may have guessed from the title of today’s post, we are hosting the Blood Donor Clinic today. We encourage everyone to come out from noon to 3 PM or from 4:30 to 6 PM to donate blood.

Tomorrow is an in-service day, and it is also the second Ski Trip of the year!

Grad Pictures are coming up on March 21.

Mr. Dykstra will be posting another meditation tomorrow.

Have an excellent long weekend! :)

Aww…

I ♥ to Read Month is drawing to a close. On Tuesday, the students again had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read). On Wednesday, they had Mountain Expedition Day. We invite those who were involved to tell us what they did that day. On Thursday, they had Librarians’ Pick Day, so the librarians all chose a favourite story to read to the students. Today is Wrap-Up Day, so the students are all dressed up as their favourite book character, and right now they are having a hot-dog lunch. We hope all the elementary students had an excellent month! :)

On Wednesday, the Varsity boys and girls had basketball games against Saint Boniface. The girls lost 41-44. The team’s small forward Cherika Bergsma said after the game, “they were a tough team.” The guys lost 62-73.

On Thursday, they both had games again, against Southeast Collegiate. The girls won 64-26, and the guys lost 31-43. The JV Boys also played against Red River, and they lost 34-52.

Today and tomorrow, the Junior Girls have a tournament at ICS, and the Junior Boys have a tournament at John Gunn. We hope they do well! :)

This afternoon the grade 9′s are leading an assembly on Challenges for high school. We have a few secrets up our sleeves. :)

What have we done…….

Umm…yeah, this has been a pretty normal school week. There was a JV Girls basketball game last night at Saint Boniface (they won), the Varsity Guys had games on Monday and Wednesday (they lost by three points on Wednesday), and that’s about it.

We are also posting the buddy reading pictures, as has been requested by a number of people.

Tonight in the Gym we are having a Trivia Night/Auction to support the ICS Band and Black Light Theatre groups’ trips to Alberta in late March and April 2012 Anno Domini.

On Wednesday, February 29, there will be a Movie Matinée for Grades 7-12 in Immanuel Hall. More details next week.

Happy Long Weekend!!! (No school on Monday — Louis Riel Day)

The Dreaded Second Semester…

Elementary has started their annual I ♥ to Read Month! The theme for this year is “Climb Into a Book and Read!” as you can see in the pictures below. On Tuesday, they had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) which is always a ton of fun! On Wednesday, they spent the afternoon drawing huge murals to hang on the walls. Today, we had Rangers and Rookies (Buddy Reading), which was a lot of fun. On Monday they will be having Guest Readers, so if you would like to come out and read to a class, please contact the office.

High School has begun a new semester. Most kids aren’t very happy about their new classes. I (Colin) myself am overjoyed with the courses I have, but I am a nerd, so that is expected :) . We would like to welcome back one of our Grade 12 students who was gone for the first semester to Louis Riel, Justin Bakker.

There have been many basketball games and tournaments this week. Today and tomorrow the JV Guys have a tournament here in our school. We encourage everyone to come out here and give our team a cheer!

Love and Respect – A Meditation on Two Romantic Songs and the Song of Songs

“You and Me Against the World”

It all started off hangin’ out doing what lovers do
When they’re on their way to fallin’ in love
Everybody said leave you alone
Girl he’s no good for you
But they can’t judge what they don’t know
Cause when I’m with chu your all I see
And when you touch me my body goes weak
Your such apart of my idenity.
That without chu
There’s no me
No nonooo

What were my dreams are now reality
You say all the things that I’m about to speak
No one can ever change the way I feel
Baby it’s you and me against the world
It’s ride or die till the very end
Till the tires pop I’ll be your second skin
Your my man no doubt that I’m your girl
Baby it’s you and me against the world.

This song is ripe with misunderstanding on what love is. I could potentially go on all day on all the different inaccuracies of love this song makes, but for now, we’ll just look at the first one made apparent. It comes right in the title. “You and Me Against the World.” Right away red flags should go up. They don’t always go up, because after all, this can be mistaken as an intense commitment to each other, which is a part of true love. But in the word, “against,” you can see that the couple in the song have no regard for people outside the relationship. This, is not Biblical at all. Further on in the song, the artist speaks of how people expressed their concern about the relationship: “Everybody said leave you alone – Girl he’s no good for you.” Her reply? – “But they can’t judge what don’t know.”. In Song of Songs 8:8-9, the brothers of the beloved are concerned about their younger sister:

“We have a little sister,
and her breasts are not yet grown.
What shall we do for our sister
on the day she is spoken for?
If she is a wall,
we will build towers of silver on her.
If she is a door,
we will enclose her with panels of cedar.”

The brothers want nothing but the best for their younger sister, and that would include a suitable man for her. A godly man. God puts rules in place to guide us, because He is a loving God and wants the best for us. That is why he gave the law “Honor your father and your mother.” In the New Testament God said through His servant Peter: “Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor” (1 Peter 2:17). Even though the artist feels as if she is in love and others outside the relationship don’t understand, she still is obligated to respect their concern and opinions….

“Butterfly Kisses”

She’ll change her name today
She’ll make a promise and I’ll give her away
Standing in the bride room just staring at her
She asked me what I’m thinkin’
And I said I’m not sure
I just feel like I’m losin’ my baby girl
And she leaned over

Gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there
Stickin’ little white flowers all up in her hair
Walk me down the aisle, Daddy
It’s just about time
Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy?
Daddy don’t cry
Oh, with all that I’ve done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses.
I couldn’t ask God for more; man, this is what love is.

This song by Bob Carlisle shows how godly relationships work; with the approval of the parents. The father in this song has clearly shown that he is in favor of his daughter getting married to the man she chose and is showing this by walking her down the aisle. The daughter has shown the proper respect, as commanded in 1 Peter 2:17.
